NAFDAC Uncovers Suspected Counterfeit Alcohol Facility in Aba

NAFDAC Says Suspected Counterfeit Alcohol Facility Uncovered in Aba

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control says it uncovered a suspected counterfeit alcoholic-drinks production facility in Aba, Abia State.

NAFDAC says its operatives uncovered the facility at No. 25 Omenazu Street during an operation on October 15 and disclosed details publicly on October 19.

The agency said officials acted on intelligence about suspected illegal manufacturing activity.

The suspected operator reportedly fled before the enforcement team could apprehend them.

Materials and Equipment Recovered

According to NAFDAC, officials found packaging materials, empty bottles, bottle caps, sealing machines, cartons and tanks containing different liquid mixtures at the premises.

The agency also reported finding ethanol, drums, sieves and other materials it suspected were being used in production.

A vehicle at the premises reportedly contained packaging materials bearing the names of alcoholic-drink brands, along with empty bottles and a drum containing liquid.

Those brand names appearing on suspected counterfeit packaging do not establish any involvement by the legitimate brand owners.

NAFDAC Estimates Value Above ₦500 Million

NAFDAC estimated the value of the equipment, materials and other components found at the premises at more than ₦500 million.

That figure is the agency’s estimate and has not been independently verified by IDNN.

Suspected Operator Reportedly Fled

NAFDAC described the person linked to the premises as a suspected operator who fled before officials arrived.

No arrest, charge or conviction has been established in the material reviewed by IDNN.

The correct legal status therefore remains that of a suspected operator linked by NAFDAC to the premises.

Did Any Products Reach Consumers?

The discovery raises a direct consumer-protection question.

But the existence of the facility does not by itself establish that products from the premises reached the market or were purchased by consumers.

The next questions are whether NAFDAC can trace any distribution network, whether product samples are being tested, and whether any recall or public warning becomes necessary.

Those points remain unresolved.

Separate From Earlier Aba Enforcement

The Omenazu Street operation should not be confused with an earlier NAFDAC raid on separate shops in Aba involving suspected counterfeit packaging materials.

The two operations involve different locations and evidence and should remain separate in reporting.

What IDNN Is Watching

IDNN will monitor for any arrest, laboratory analysis, product-tracing action, recall, public warning or further NAFDAC statement on the suspected production operation.
