Otuocha Market Shut After Aguleri–Umuoba-Anam Clash in Anambra

Anambra Keeps Otuocha Market Shut After Aguleri–Umuoba-Anam Clash, Five Deaths Reported

Anambra State authorities have kept Otuocha Market closed following renewed violence between Aguleri and Umuoba-Anam communities, with traditional rulers from the two communities reporting five deaths.

The violence in Anambra East Local Government Area has disrupted commercial activity around Otuocha and renewed public-safety concerns linked to a longstanding land and boundary dispute.

Community traditional rulers were reported as saying three people died on the Aguleri side and two on the Umuoba-Anam side.

The five-death figure remains attributed to the community leaders and has not been independently established in the active story file as a police-confirmed casualty total.

Anambra State authorities intervened after the violence and ordered the closure of Otuocha Market as part of measures aimed at preventing further escalation.

The market remained closed at the latest verified update, disrupting traders and other residents who depend on the commercial hub.

The state government has also summoned stakeholders for an emergency peace and security meeting scheduled for October 7, which is expected to address immediate security concerns and the underlying dispute.

Accounts of how the latest confrontation began remain contested. IDNN is not assigning responsibility for starting the violence to either community without stronger evidence.

A separate claim that as many as 16 people died has circulated, but that figure has not been sufficiently verified and is excluded from IDNN’s casualty count.

The immediate public-interest questions are whether security measures can prevent renewed violence, what conditions authorities will require before reopening Otuocha Market, and what process will follow the peace meeting.

For traders and residents, the immediate consequence is clear: a major market remains shut while uncertainty continues over security and reopening.

IDNN will update this report if authorities confirm a revised casualty figure, announce further security measures, reopen the market or disclose the outcome of the October 7 peace meeting.
