Six-year-old Anambra pupil found dead after flood; nine others rescued
Six-year-old UNIZIK Primary School pupil Success Ezenwafor has been found dead after being swept away during flooding along Nibo–Isiagu Road in Awka South. Police says seven other children and two adults were rescued.
AWKA — The body of six-year-old Success Ezenwafor, a pupil of UNIZIK Primary School, has been recovered after he was swept away during severe flooding in Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra State.
The incident happened on September 22 along Nibo–Isiagu Road after hours of heavy rainfall triggered flash flooding across parts of Awka.
Anambra Police says seven other schoolchildren and two adults were rescued from the flooded area and taken for treatment.
Success remained missing after the initial rescue operation.
Awka South Local Government Chairman Chinedu Okafor later confirmed that the child’s body had been recovered during the continuing search.
Nine people rescued from flooded route
Police says Safe School Operatives worked with community members during the rescue.
Seven children and two adults were eventually brought to safety.
An earlier Anambra State Government update, issued while the operation was still underway, reported six children and a driver rescued. That was an interim count and was later superseded by the police figure of nine people rescued.
Heavy rainfall triggered flash flooding
The Anambra State Government says several hours of heavy rainfall produced flash flooding across Awka and created dangerous conditions for motorists and pedestrians.
The government says personnel from the Fire Service, State Emergency Management Agency and National Emergency Management Agency were deployed during the emergency.
Authorities later advised residents to avoid unnecessary movement during heavy rainfall and to stay away from moving floodwater and known flood-prone areas.
Death raises school-transport safety questions
The incident raises questions about how school transport should operate during severe weather.
Authorities and transport operators will need to establish what weather and flood warnings were available before the journey, how dangerous routes are assessed during heavy rainfall and when school transport should be delayed, suspended or diverted.
Those questions can be investigated without assuming that road or drainage failure caused the child’s death.

For now, the verified position remains limited: Success Ezenwafor, 6, died after being swept away during flooding along Nibo–Isiagu Road, while seven other children and two adults were rescued. Heavy rainfall and flash flooding are established; the precise infrastructure factors behind the fatal incident are not.
