Nigeria braces for disaster as the flood warning issued by the Federal Ministry of Environment covers 32 communities across 11 states between September 14–18.
Director Usman Bokani of the National Flood Early Warning Centre cautioned that rising waters in Rivers Benue, Niger, and Gongola posed “grave risks” to lowland communities.
The ministry urged immediate evacuation of residents in vulnerable floodplains spanning Adamawa, Benue, Taraba, Delta, Kebbi, Kano, Katsina, Sokoto, Zamfara, Niger, and Nasarawa.
“This is a red alert,” Bokani stressed, noting that 231 lives have already been lost to flooding in 2025, with over 1,200 displaced.
The warning comes amid fears of repeat devastation after 2024’s catastrophic floods displaced 1.2 million Nigerians.
