Bauchi police arrest 25-year-old over fatal shooting in Toro

Bauchi State Police Command says it has arrested a 25-year-old man, Jabir Yusuf, over the fatal shooting of Hassan Mohamed, also 25, in Toro Local Government Area.

The incident occurred on September 7 in Rinjin Gura village, Zalau Ward, according to a statement by police spokesperson SP Nafiu Habib.

Police allege that Yusuf discharged a Dane gun and shot Mohamed in the neck, causing fatal injuries.

That account remains a police allegation. Yusuf has been arrested, but IDNN has not established that he has been charged or convicted of any offence.

Victim pronounced dead at hospital

Police said officers responded after the incident was reported.

Mohamed was taken to Toro General Hospital for treatment, where police said he was pronounced dead by the doctor on duty.

His remains were later released to his family for burial.

Gun recovered, investigation transferred

The police said Yusuf was subsequently arrested and a Dane gun recovered as an exhibit.

According to the command, the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Bauchi for further investigation and possible prosecution.

Commissioner of Police Sani-Omolori Aliyu ordered investigators to establish the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

The command also warned residents against unlawful possession and reckless handling of firearms.

At this stage, the legal position remains limited: police have arrested Yusuf in connection with Mohamed’s death and say they recovered a Dane gun, but an arrest is not proof of guilt and no court determination has been established.

The next accountability test is whether the investigation results in formal charges and what evidence, if any, is eventually placed before a court.
