Police recover gun, speedboats in Akwa Ibom operation over alleged kidnap plot

Akwa Ibom State Police Command says marine operatives recovered a firearm, ammunition, speedboats and outboard engines during an operation along the Calabar–Oron Channel after receiving intelligence about an alleged plan to carry out a kidnapping in the Oron area.

The operation took place on 8 September 2026, according to police spokesperson DSP Timfon John.

John said Marine Police officers in Oron, working with Marine Hunters, acted on information about an alleged kidnapping plan and moved into the area where the items were recovered.

That alleged plot remains a police intelligence claim. IDNN has not independently established that a kidnapping operation was being prepared or that the recovered items were intended for such an offence.

Police list recovered items

According to the police account, officers recovered one pump-action gun, two cartridges, two speedboats, three 200-horsepower outboard engines and one 15-horsepower outboard engine.

Police also listed a white rope among the recovered items and said it was suspected to have been intended for criminal use.

The command said the recovered items were documented and taken into custody for further investigation.

No arrest, charge or prosecution was established in the material reviewed by IDNN.

The recovery of weapons and marine equipment does not by itself establish who owned the items, whether they had previously been used in a crime or whether a specific kidnapping offence had been planned.

Investigation now becomes the test

The next accountability question is what the police investigation establishes about the recovered items and any individuals who may be linked to them.

That includes whether investigators identify lawful ownership, forensic evidence, suspects or other material capable of supporting the allegation that a kidnapping operation was being prepared.

Until that evidence emerges, the strongest verified position remains narrow: Akwa Ibom Police say officers recovered a gun, ammunition, speedboats and engines during a September 8 waterways operation triggered by intelligence about an alleged kidnapping plan; the alleged plot itself has not been independently established.
