Kara Bridge repairs trigger severe Lagos-Ibadan Expressway gridlock
Repair work on damaged expansion joints at Kara Bridge has triggered severe traffic on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, leaving motorists stranded for hours during the first day of the latest intervention.
The repair began on September 8, 2026.
Traffic authorities say the current work is scheduled to continue through September 22.

Gridlock stretches toward Lagos
Reporters monitoring the corridor on September 8 observed heavy congestion extending from Kara Bridge toward 7Up Junction and Secretariat Bus Stop.
Traffic also stretched toward Otunba Jobi Fele Way as motorists approaching the Otedola area faced slow movement.
Some commuters reported spending hours on journeys that normally take much less time.
The congestion was severe during the observed period, but that does not mean the entire Lagos-Ibadan Expressway remained gridlocked continuously.
Repair is phased, not a full closure
The Federal Ministry of Works says the damaged expansion joints are being replaced in phases.
One half of the affected section is closed while vehicles are allowed through the remaining half under traffic control.
The intervention therefore does not amount to a full closure of Kara Bridge or the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
Traffic agencies deployed
Police, military personnel, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, the Federal Road Safety Corps and Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps were deployed around the bridge.
Traffic officers were observed alternating movement from Isheri and Ojodu with vehicles coming along the expressway.
The deployment is intended to reduce the risk of a total traffic lock.
It does not mean the congestion has been resolved.
Alternative routes advised
Authorities have advised motorists who can avoid the affected corridor to allow additional travel time or use alternative routes where appropriate.
Among the routes specifically identified are Ikorodu-Ogijo Road, Shimawa Bridge and the old Abeokuta road.
Those alternatives will not suit every journey, particularly for motorists travelling to communities directly along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
Why the repair matters
The Federal Ministry of Works says the expansion joints have exceeded their service life and need replacement to preserve the bridge and improve road safety.
The immediate citizen consequence, however, is travel disruption.
