Haaland Breaks Brazil As Norway Storm Into Historic World Cup Quarter-Final

Erling Haaland turned Norway’s World Cup dream into Brazil’s nightmare, scoring twice late on as the Scandinavians stunned the five-time champions 2-1 in New Jersey to reach their first-ever men’s World Cup quarter-final.

Brazil had chances to control the last-16 tie, but Bruno Guimarães missed from the penalty spot, Ørjan Nyland produced a commanding goalkeeping display, and Haaland punished the Selecao with the ruthlessness Brazil could not find at the other end.

The result sends Norway into a quarter-final against England and leaves Carlo Ancelotti’s Brazil facing another painful knockout inquest.

Brazil Let Their Warning Go

Norway were not passengers in the opening exchanges.

Ståle Solbakken’s side thought they had taken an early lead when Alexander Sørloth set up Patrick Berg, only for the move to be ruled out for offside. It was an early warning that Norway had arrived with more than survival in mind.

Brazil were then handed a major chance to seize control after Kristoffer Ajer was penalised for a challenge on Matheus Cunha following a VAR review.

Guimarães stepped up from 12 yards, but Nyland read the moment and kept out the penalty. That save became one of the turning points of the night.

Brazil pressed after that escape. Gabriel Martinelli forced Nyland into action, Vinícius Júnior threatened, and Endrick was introduced after the break to sharpen Ancelotti’s attack.

But Brazil could not turn pressure into authority.

Nyland Holds, Haaland Strikes

Norway stayed alive because Nyland refused to bend.

The goalkeeper kept Brazil frustrated across the contest, giving Norway the platform to grow into the second half. The longer Brazil failed to score, the more the match began to tilt toward the one player Ancelotti’s side could not afford to leave with one clear moment.

Haaland only needed the door to open.

With 79 minutes played, Andreas Schjelderup delivered from the left and Haaland attacked the far post with brutal conviction, heading Norway in front and changing the entire temperature of the tie. The Guardian reports that Schjelderup assisted both Haaland goals after coming on, while Sky Sports confirms the opening goal came in the 79th minute.
Brazil chased a response, but Norway struck again.

In the 90th minute, Haaland found space, steadied himself and drove a left-footed finish past Alisson. It was cold, clean and decisive. The kind of finish that turns a shock into history.

Neymar’s Penalty Comes Too Late

Brazil did find the net deep into stoppage time. Neymar converted from the penalty spot in the 90th minute plus 10 after Leo Østigård was penalized for an aerial challenge, but the goal only reduced the damage. It did not change the direction of the night.

By then, Brazil were already staring at elimination.

Norway Now Carry Knockout Momentum

For Norway, this was more than a famous result.

It was proof that their tournament is no longer built only on Haaland’s goals. Nyland’s saves, Schjelderup’s impact, Solbakken’s structure and the team’s refusal to panic all shaped the upset.

Still, Haaland will own the headline. His late double moved Norway past one of football’s great powers and pushed him deeper into the Golden Boot conversation. The Guardian reports that Haaland’s brace took him to seven goals at the tournament.

Brazil came to New Jersey chasing a sixth World Cup crown. They left with another broken knockout dream.

Norway left with history and England waiting.
