Nigeria’s basketball community has been thrown into mourning following the passing of Mrs. Oyiba Veronica Mark, mother of prominent basketball promoter and founder of the Mark D’Ball initiative, Mr. Igoche Mark.
According to a statement issued by the family, Mrs. Mark died peacefully on Monday, June 29, 2026.
“With deep sorrow but total submission to the will of Almighty God, the family of Mrs. Oyiba Veronica Mark announces the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend,” the statement read.
The family described the late matriarch as a pillar of faith, love and compassion — a woman whose life touched many and whose legacy will endure.
“She was a woman of faith, love, strength, and compassion whose life touched countless people. Her kindness, wisdom, and unwavering devotion to her family and community will remain a lasting legacy. Though her departure leaves a great void in our hearts, we are comforted by the beautiful memories she leaves behind and by the assurance that she now rests in eternal peace.”

Her son, Igoche Mark, is widely known for the Mark D’Ball initiative — a platform that has grown into one of Nigeria’s most influential grassroots basketball programmes, nurturing young talent and energising the sport’s development nationwide.
The family says funeral arrangements will be announced in due course as they lean on their faith for comfort during this difficult period.
