Former France and West Ham attacking midfielder Dimitri Payet has announced his retirement from football at the age of 38. Payet made the announcement during a half-time interview in the match between his former club Marseille and Lille on Sunday.

Payet’s career saw him play for several top clubs, including Nantes, St-Etienne, Lille, West Ham, and Marseille. He gained prominence during his time at West Ham, where he joined from Marseille in 2015 for £10.7 million before returning to the French club in 2017 for £25 million. Payet scored 15 goals in 60 appearances for West Ham and became a fan favorite. Despite his success in England, he returned to Marseille to “go back to his roots.”
