Imo State’s Struggles and Call for Reform in Sports Development
The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Imo State Chapter, has called for urgent action to address the state’s declining sports performance, as reflected in Team Imo’s 9th-place finish at the 2025 Niger Delta Games. SWAN’s review highlighted several key areas in need of improvement, particularly sports facilities, grassroots sports programs, and coach recruitment.
Ninth-Place Finish and Deteriorating Facilities
Imo State finished last out of nine participating states in the Niger Delta Games, a setback from the previous edition where they placed eighth. The Dan Anyiam Stadium, once a proud facility in Owerri and the flagship of Imo’s sporting infrastructure, has deteriorated to the point that it no longer accommodates key sports disciplines like athletics. The stadium, which hosted the 1998 National Sports Festival, is now only used for football matches. Without standard tartan tracks and other necessary facilities, athletes in Imo are forced to train on hard concrete surfaces, putting them at a competitive disadvantage.
The Importance of Grassroots Sports
Imo SWAN emphasized the crucial role of grassroots sports as the foundation for identifying and developing athletic talent. School and community competitions once played an essential part in this process, but these have largely disappeared, leaving the state with few avenues for discovering promising young athletes. The lack of consistent school sports programs and community competitions has resulted in the need to recruit athletes from other states for competitions, rather than developing local talent.
IMO SWAN also pointed out that the state has not organized any sustained grassroots sports programs in recent years, a problem which has led to a talent pipeline crisis. With no structured approach to developing young athletes, it becomes difficult for elite sports to thrive.
The Urgent Need for Infrastructure and Qualified Coaches
Another critical issue raised by SWAN Imo was the shortage of qualified coaches in several sports disciplines in the state. Many coaches in Imo have not been recruited in decades, with older, often outdated training methods still in practice. The state is also lacking in proper technical personnel to coach and manage younger athletes.
To address this, SWAN Imo recommended that the sports federations in the state be properly reconstituted and strengthened, with a particular focus on recruiting new, qualified coaches for all disciplines. The association also stressed the need for transparency and accountability in the management of funds allocated for sports development.

Despite the challenges, SWAN Imo remains optimistic about the future of sports in the state. They are committed to working with both the state government and other relevant stakeholders to rebuild and reposition Imo as a leading sporting state in Nigeria. SWAN emphasized that a combination of better sports infrastructure, improved grassroots programs, and reformed coaching structures is needed to turn around the fortunes of sports in Imo State.
