The Confédération Africaine de Football (CAF) has paid tribute to Gianni Infantino as he marks a decade at the helm of FIFA. Infantino first assumed office in February 2016, following the departure of his predecessor Sepp Blatter, during a time when FIFA’s credibility had been severely damaged by corruption scandals. In his first election, Infantino won a heated race, securing 115 votes in the second round to defeat Sheikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa, who received 88 votes. Other candidates, such as Prince Ali bin al Hussein and Jerome Champagne, failed to make a significant impact.

Infantino was re-elected in 2019 by acclamation, standing unopposed for a second four-year term at the FIFA Congress in Paris.
