Agor-Uwagboe Gully Erosion: Edo Residents Seek Help

Edo Residents Seek Help as Gully Erosion Threatens Homes and Access Road

Agor-Uwagboe residents say erosion has destroyed about 30 homes and disrupted road access. They are appealing to the Edo State Government for intervention.

Residents of Agor-Uwagboe in Edo State’s Oredo Local Government Area have appealed for government intervention over expanding gully erosion they say has destroyed about 30 homes.

In PUNCH’s November 2 report, resident Ernest Uwagboe said the gully continued to widen, threatening more properties. The account did not establish when each house was lost or provide an official damage assessment.

Damaged Route Disrupts Movement

The newspaper reported that erosion had severed an access road through Ofumwengbe and Egbiri.

Residents reportedly built a wooden crossing for motorcycles, providing limited passage across the damaged route.

Community spokesperson Kenneth Adoni said movement became particularly difficult during rainfall, sometimes preventing children from reaching school.

Community Appeals for Intervention

Adoni appealed to Governor Monday Okpebholo for assistance.

He said residents had written to government agencies but had yet to receive help. IDNN has not independently verified that correspondence or the government’s response.

Residents’ immediate concerns include further property losses and the disruption of access to neighbouring communities. The published accounts describe a continuing problem rather than a single incident in which all the homes were destroyed at once.

Damage Figures Remain Unverified

IDNN has not independently verified the number of destroyed or threatened buildings or displaced households. A site-specific government response was not available in the reports reviewed.

The extent of the damage and plans to protect homes and restore reliable access remain key questions.
