Djokovic’s Great Escape
Novak Djokovic’s quest for a record Grand Slam title continued in dramatic fashion after fifth seed Lorenzo Musetti retired from their Australian Open quarter-final match with an injury. Musetti had taken a two-set lead, 6-4, 6-3, and was leading 1-3 in the third set when he was forced to quit.
Djokovic Shows Sportsmanship
Djokovic, who is aiming for his 25th Grand Slam title, expressed sympathy for Musetti’s situation. “I feel really sorry for him,” Djokovic said. “He was a far better player today. I was on my way home tonight, but these things happen in sport. It’s unfortunate for him, especially in the quarter-finals of a Grand Slam.”
Djokovic’s Fresh Start
The 38-year-old Serb returned to action after an extended break following a walkover win in the fourth round against Jakub Mensik. Djokovic’s freshness was evident as he started sharply, using a variety of shots to break early.
Musetti’s Challenge
However, Musetti managed to level the first set at 2-2 before surging ahead to win 6-4. He then broke Djokovic’s serve in the second set and looked to be in full control of the match. “My strategy worked well for the first few games, then everything changed,” Djokovic remarked about his shift in play.
The Injury Break
Djokovic soldiered on after receiving treatment for a foot blister. He managed to break Musetti in the third set to lead 2-1, but Musetti then called for the trainer after what appeared to be a right thigh injury. Though Musetti attempted to continue, his injury worsened, and he retired a game later, sending Djokovic through to his 103rd match win at the Australian Open, surpassing Roger Federer’s record.
Djokovic’s Next Opponent
With the win, Djokovic now faces the winner of the quarter-final between defending champion Jannik Sinner and American Ben Shelton, set for later in the day.
