Nigeria’s ambition for a fourth Africa Cup of Nations title has suffered a major blow after captain William Troost-Ekong announced his retirement from international football less than a month before AFCON 2025 kicks off in Morocco. The defender confirmed the decision in a short message shared on X, calling his decade in the national colours “an honour” and stating he would remain “forever a Super Eagle.”

Troost-Ekong, 32, made 83 appearances and scored eight goals for Nigeria after debuting in 2015, emerging as one of the team’s most reliable figures. His leadership peaked at the 2023 AFCON, where he was named Player of the Tournament for guiding the Super Eagles to a memorable second-place finish.
His retirement, however, comes at a moment of deep uncertainty for the national team. Nigeria is already without young defender Benjamin Frederick, who suffered a long-term injury ruling him out of AFCON . Ekong’s exit now forces head coach Eric Chelle to reorganise the defensive core of a squad already tested by inconsistency and pressure.

Fans across social media have expressed shock, frustration and gratitude in equal measure. Many praised Troost-Ekong for his service, while others questioned the timing with AFCON preparations entering a crucial phase. The Super Eagles open camp in Egypt next week.

Ekong said his commitment to Nigeria “never ends,” but his retirement marks the end of an era for the team’s defensive leadership—a period that saw him evolve into the emotional and tactical anchor of the squad.
His departure leaves Nigeria with only one remaining centre-back with major tournament experience as AFCON approaches.
