Jonathan 2027 Bid Splits PDP as Gana’s Claim Sparks Party Rebuttal

IDNN Politics Desk

Nigeria’s political space was jolted at the weekend after former Minister of Information, Professor Jerry Gana, declared that ex-President Goodluck Jonathan would contest the 2027 presidential election on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Gana, speaking in Minna, Niger State, argued that Nigerians, having lived through Muhammadu Buhari’s eight-year tenure and Bola Tinubu’s current administration, were now “yearning for Jonathan’s return.”

He told party faithful: “Nigerians have seen the difference, and the difference is very clear. Nigerians are now asking us to bring back our friend, former President Goodluck Jonathan.”

PDP’s Pushback

Barely 24 hours later, the PDP’s National Working Committee (NWC) distanced itself from Gana’s remarks.
National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, stressed in Abuja that Gana was speaking for himself, not the party.

“Professor Jerry Gana doesn’t speak for the PDP. Our party has eminently qualified Nigerians, particularly among our governors, who are capable of leading. We will cross the 2027 bridge when we get there,” he said.

The PDP also disowned a state congress in Calabar, describing it as a “pre-carnival gathering,” insisting only the NWC can convene valid congresses.

Ripple Effect

The controversy underscores a deeper tension within the PDP:

  • Nostalgia vs Renewal: Gana’s comments evoke sentiment for Jonathan’s more conciliatory leadership style.
  • Governors’ Claim: PDP insiders argue rising governors in the South are the true frontrunners.
  • Tinubu Factor: With Tinubu consolidating reforms and battling crises, PDP strategists weigh whether a familiar face like Jonathan could rally the base.

Impact

  • Internal Friction: The NWC’s denial highlights ongoing PDP discipline challenges.
  • Election 2027: Early jockeying signals the PDP may face renewed factional battles.
  • Public Perception: Nigerians are left guessing—Jonathan has made no public comment on his 2027 intentions.
