Diri Defects to APC, Cites Bayelsa’s Interest Over Party Loyalty

Thanksgiving and Political Conversion

At the 14th Bayelsa Thanksgiving Day in Yenagoa, Governor Douye Diri broke his silence.
He told worshippers that his defection from the PDP was not betrayal but strategic realignment.

“Somebody had to take the decision, and I did—on behalf of Bayelsa,” he declared to applause.

Cross-Party Endorsements and Unity Optics

The event turned into a political tableau of bipartisan endorsement.
Present were Minister of State for Petroleum Heineken Lokpobiri, NDDC MD Samuel Ogbuku, and Delta Governor Sheriff Oborevwori—each praising Diri’s “maturity and inclusiveness.”

Lokpobiri hailed Diri as a unifier, while Ogbuku called him “a godsend to Bayelsa.”
Clergy and traditional rulers described the moment as “divine alignment,” further signalling the governor’s consolidation under the ruling party’s umbrella.

Diri’s move further depletes the PDP’s southern flank. Analysts say the defection grants the APC complete coastal control, from Rivers to Delta.
Bishop Mike Okonkwo, preaching at the ceremony, framed it as destiny:

“When God is Alpha and Omega, victory is assured.”

Power, Oil, and Policy Access

The defection gives Bayelsa direct access to the federal economic council, oil policy circles, and major energy infrastructure negotiations.
Political observers see the shift as “pragmatic repositioning” before the 2027 cycle.
