The leadership tussle within the Labour Party intensified on Saturday as Abia State Governor Alex Otti publicly backed INEC’s recognition of Senator Nenadi Usman as the authentic national chair of the party.

Speaking through his media adviser, Ferdinand Ekeoma, Otti described INEC’s position as “a welcome development and one long overdue.” He said the decision brings much-needed clarity after months of confusion created by rival factions battling for control of the party.

“We are grateful to INEC and to the institutions that ensured the Supreme Court’s judgment was respected. This recognition restores peace, cohesion, and stability to our party,” Otti stated.

Abure Faction vs INEC.
Labour Party crisis deepens — INEC declares Julius Abure’s tenure expired, but his faction insists he remains the legitimate national chairman.

He urged Julius Abure and his loyalists to respect the Supreme Court’s judgment and join hands with progressives in rebuilding the Labour Party, instead of causing further division.

The governor argued that INEC’s recognition aligned with the apex court’s verdict, which held that Abure’s tenure had expired. According to Otti, the ruling now clears the way for genuine reconciliation and restructuring within the party.

Political analysts say Otti’s support for the Usman-led faction significantly strengthens its legitimacy and could shift momentum against Abure’s camp, which continues to insist on its authority.

With the Labour Party already weakened by internal battles, observers warn that prolonged division could damage its chances ahead of the 2027 general elections unless reconciliation is achieved.
