“This Is Persecution” – Natasha Akpoti Accuses Akpabio of Orchestrating Personal Vendetta Over Sexual Harassment Petition

Why Was I Suspended a Day After My Petition?” – Natasha Roars at NASS Gate

By : IDNN Politics Desk

The political firestorm surrounding the controversial suspension of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan escalated Tuesday as the Kogi Central lawmaker accused Senate President Godswill Akpabio of weaponizing legislative power to punish her for filing a sexual harassment petition against him.

Speaking to journalists at the gates of the National Assembly, where she was barred from entering plenary, Akpoti described her suspension as both unconstitutional and a targeted political persecution.

“This isn’t disciplinary action — it’s a vendetta. Akpabio is personally offended because I dared to speak,” she declared.

She claimed her suspension occurred less than 24 hours after submitting the petition, calling it a move to silence her for confronting sexual misconduct and institutional impunity in the legislature.

Court Ruling Flouted, Democracy Derailed

Referencing Justice Binta Nyako’s judgment, Akpoti said the court was clear that her suspension was excessive and unconstitutional.

“Section 63 of the 1999 Constitution mandates me to attend 181 plenary days a year. You’re denying me — and my constituents — that right.”

She described the process leading to her suspension as a sham, saying it was based on “a mere photocopied attendance sheet” by the Senate Ethics Committee.

“There was no investigation, no hearing, no due process. Just a crude attempt to shut me up.”

Inside The Chamber: Fear, Intimidation, Silence

Beyond her personal ordeal, Akpoti accused Akpabio of creating a climate of fear in the Senate.

“Many senators are afraid to speak. His leadership is the worst we’ve ever had. He does not tolerate dissent.”

She claims her vocal stance against impunity, corruption, and institutional bullying has made her a target — not just of suspension, but of fraudulent recall attempts, public smears, and two “frivolous” criminal cases.

“The same people accusing me should be in jail. They’re facing EFCC files for looting. Yet I’m the one on trial?”

“This Isn’t Just About Me — It’s About Nigerian Women”

Despite being locked out of the chamber, Akpoti said she’s not backing down. Her legal team is exploring appeals and further action.

“This isn’t about Natasha. It’s about women, about justice, about democracy. No woman should be punished for speaking up. No Nigerian should be silenced.”

She vowed to continue working for her constituents and reshaping the narrative for women in leadership.

“I didn’t enter politics to play safe. I came to raise the bar. And I won’t let this injustice define our future.”
