Imaobong Uko Breaks Silence on Doping Ban as AFN Defends Procedure

Abuja, Nigeria | July 7, 2025 – IDNN Athletics Desk

Nigerian sprint sensation Imaobong Nse Uko has finally spoken out following her 4-year doping ban, describing the sanction as “unclear, unfair, and emotionally devastating.”

Uko, who was part of Nigeria’s Tokyo 2020 4x400m mixed relay team, was sanctioned by the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) for a whereabouts violation and alleged tampering with the doping control process.

“I have never taken any banned substance. The decision was rushed. I was not allowed to defend myself adequately,” Uko said in an emotional Instagram video.

She insists her team has already filed an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), demanding a review of the investigation process and evidence handling.

AFN: “The System Worked”

In response, the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) released a statement reaffirming its commitment to WADA-compliant anti-doping enforcement.

“The process that led to Uko’s ban was supervised at every level. Due process was followed,” said AFN Secretary-General Rita Esene.

The AFN also revealed that Nigeria has had six active doping investigations ongoing since 2023 and warned athletes to remain compliant with the whereabouts rule and biological passport regulations.

Backlash from Fans and Athletes

The controversy has divided opinion in Nigeria’s track community. Some believe Uko was made a scapegoat due to administrative negligence, while others argue athletes must uphold absolute responsibility.

“The AFN is being selective,” said a retired sprinter who asked not to be named. “Too many questionable bans lately.”

Athlete support groups are calling for more transparent athlete education, improved access to legal counsel during proceedings, and independent oversight during investigations.

IDNN VERDICT:
Imaobong Uko’s case highlights a deeper clash between trust, process, and transparency in Nigerian athletics. Whether scapegoat or guilty, her voice—and rights—deserve to be heard.
