Blackout Looms as AEDC Disconnects Govt Ministries, MDAs Over ₦47bn Debt

The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) has issued a 10-day final disconnection notice to 86 government agencies, Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) over outstanding electricity debts totaling ₦47 billion.

In a public memo released Saturday, AEDC said it would commence mass disconnection across its franchise areas in FCT, Kogi, Nasarawa, and Niger States starting June 11, if payments are not made.

“The company can no longer continue to carry this debt burden,” the notice read.

Major Offenders Include:

Presidency Villa (State House, Abuja) – ₦923 million
Ministry of Finance HQ – ₦126 million
Ministry of Education – ₦89 million
National Stadium – ₦125 million
Defence College – ₦19 million
Office of the SGF – ₦22 million
INEC HQ – ₦18 million

Disconnection Schedule Confirmed

AEDC spokesperson Oyebode Fadipe confirmed that if full or substantial payment is not made, field teams will commence phased cuts without exemption.

“The integrity of the electricity value chain is at risk if these debts are not resolved,” he warned.
