Rivers in Ruins: Tinubu Suspends Fubara, Declares State of Emergency, Installs Sole Administrator

Vice Admiral (Rtd) Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas who acts as the sole administrator. of Rivers state after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu  declared a state of emergency, suspending Governor Siminalayi Fubara, Deputy Governor Ngozi Odu, and all lawmakers for six months has wasted no time asserting control. On Wednesday, 26 of February his chief of staff issued a statement suspending all political office holders in the state.

“This is pursuant to the powers conferred on the administrator of Rivers State by the President,” the statement read.

The sweeping suspension affects every tier of government. Those removed include:

  • Secretary to the State Government

  • Chief of Staff

  • All Commissioners

  • Chairpersons and members of boards, agencies, and parastatals

  • Special advisers and assistants

Each of them must hand over to the most senior civil servant or permanent secretary in their department.

Crisis Fueled by Political Feud and Violence

This drastic move did not happen in isolation. It followed weeks of unrest sparked by the rift between Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, now the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory.

The president blamed growing violence in the state. Explosions, pipeline vandalism, and rising tensions were all tied to the ongoing political feud.

Because of this, President Tinubu invoked emergency powers. He then appointed Admiral Ibas to stabilize the situation.

On Thursday, the House of Representatives approved the emergency declaration. Shortly after, the Senate also gave its support, although it made minor adjustments.

What Happens Next in Rivers?

Many Nigerians are now asking: Will this solve the crisis or deepen it?

Supporters say the president acted decisively to restore peace. However, critics warn of executive overreach and a threat to democratic governance.

Regardless, Rivers State has entered a new phase. With the military-styled leadership of Ibas, the next six months will be critical.

Will calm return—or will the political storm rage on?
