Wike to PDP Governors: “Your Arrogance Will Bury the Party”

FCT Minister Nyesom Wike has accused governors under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) of orchestrating the party’s downfall through arrogance and disregard for internal democracy.

In his October media chat in Abuja, Wike said: “These governors will bury the PDP. You cannot run a party by excluding those who built it. If you sideline key stakeholders, expect implosion.”

He branded the planned November 15–16 convention in Ibadan as “illegal” and vowed not to attend, insisting the organisers violated the party’s constitutional processes.

PDP in Disarray

The outburst deepens the rift within the opposition, already fractured by litigation and factional battles. Party figures including Samuel Anyanwu and several state chairmen have accused the governors’ forum of forging signatures and hijacking congress lists to control the outcome of the convention.

Governance, Ego, and Power

Wike’s remarks come as the PDP faces its weakest state in two decades, holding only a handful of governorships and enduring defections of key figures. Analysts say the minister’s rebellion, while polarising, keeps him politically relevant and could shape realignments ahead of 2027.

The Opposition Market

The PDP’s crisis also exposes a vacuum in Nigeria’s political marketplace: a weakened opposition opens more ground for the ruling APC. Wike’s defiance may thus serve Tinubu’s broader interest — consolidating national dominance while his minister shakes the opposition from within.
