Switzerland are through to the World Cup last 16 after a controlled 2-0 win over Algeria at BC Place, ending the Fennecs’ tournament and extending Swiss momentum in the knockout stage.
Breel Embolo gave Switzerland the early breakthrough in Vancouver before Dan Ndoye struck at the start of the second half, punishing Algeria for missed chances and a lack of cutting edge in the final third.
The result sends Murat Yakin’s side into the next round, where they will face either Colombia or Ghana, while Algeria leave the tournament after failing to turn early promise into scoreboard pressure.
Algeria Start Bright But Switzerland Strike First
Algeria began with energy and should have made more of their early pressure.
Houssem Aouar had a promising opening inside the box but steered his effort wide, allowing Switzerland to survive a moment that could have changed the match before it settled.
That miss became costly almost immediately.
Johan Manzambi drove to the byline after a sharp Swiss attack and pulled the ball across the six-yard area for Embolo to finish from close range in the 10th minute.
It was Switzerland’s first clear blow and Algeria never fully recovered.
The Fennecs still found occasional routes forward, with Fares Chaibi and Ibrahim Maza involved before the break, but Gregor Kobel was not placed under enough sustained pressure.
Ndoye Knocks The Fight Out Of Algeria
Switzerland made the second half count almost immediately.
A poor Algerian clearance handed Ndoye the chance to shoot from inside the area, and he found the bottom corner to make it 2-0 in the 46th minute.
That goal changed the emotional shape of the match.
At 1-0, Algeria still had a route back. At 2-0, the game began to move away from them.
Switzerland controlled the tempo, protected their lead and denied Algeria the kind of momentum required to force late chaos.
Fabian Rieder had a late chance to add a third but could not finish, leaving Switzerland with a professional 2-0 win rather than a heavier scoreline.
Swiss Control, Algerian Regret
For Switzerland, this was not a wild knockout performance. It was efficient.
They scored early in each half, controlled key phases and never allowed Algeria to turn possession into panic. Reports also highlighted the influence of Manzambi, whose run created the opener and whose tournament form has become one of Switzerland’s strongest storylines.
For Algeria, the regret is clear.
The early Aouar chance, Maza’s first-half opening and the defensive error before Ndoye’s goal gave the match its shape. Algeria had moments, but not enough final-third authority.
That is the cruelty of knockout football. You can start brightly and still be punished if you do not score when the game offers you a door.
