SSANU gives FG 14-day ultimatum over unpaid arrears

SSANU gives FG 14 days to pay arrears, threatens indefinite strike

The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities has given the Federal Government 14 days to address outstanding arrears tied to its 2026 agreement with the union, warning that failure could lead to an indefinite strike across affected institutions.

SSANU says implementation of the agreement remains incomplete in parts of the university system and is demanding the release of funds for outstanding payments.

The ultimatum does not mean an indefinite strike has started.

For now, it is a warning tied to the government’s response during the 14-day window.

SSANU says arrears remain outstanding

SSANU President Mohammed Ibrahim said the union expects government to fund outstanding obligations under the agreement and complete implementation across affected universities and inter-university centres.

The union’s position is that payments and other agreed measures have not been implemented uniformly.

Those claims remain attributed to SSANU and should not be read as an independent finding that the Federal Government has breached the agreement.

Union warns of indefinite action

SSANU says failure to resolve the outstanding issues within the ultimatum period could trigger a total, comprehensive and indefinite strike.

That distinction matters.

Ultimatum ≠ strike.

Any disruption to university services would begin only if the union activates the threatened industrial action and its scope is confirmed.

Government assurance remains to be tested

The union says Education Minister Tunji Alausa assured SSANU that the outstanding funds would be released by next week.

That assurance provides the government side of the immediate dispute, but it is not proof that payment has already occurred.

The accountability sequence remains:

assurance ≠ release
release ≠ payment
payment ≠ full implementation

The next test is whether funds are actually released to the affected institutions and whether workers receive the arrears within the ultimatum period.

Why it matters

A strike by senior non-academic university workers could disrupt administrative, technical and support services across institutions covered by SSANU.

Depending on the scope of any action, the consequences could affect students, examinations, records, laboratories, admissions, maintenance and other university operations.

Those consequences remain potential rather than current.

No nationwide shutdown should be inferred from the ultimatum alone.

What happens next

The immediate question is whether the Federal Government meets the funding commitment within the 14-day window.

If the funds are released and arrears are paid, the dispute could de-escalate.

If not, SSANU says it is prepared to proceed with indefinite industrial action.

For now, the verified position is straightforward:

SSANU has issued a 14-day ultimatum. An indefinite strike has not begun.
