Police Arrest Suspect After Owner Identifies Goat at Sokoto Market
Police in Sokoto State have arrested a man after the owner of a goat allegedly taken during a livestock-theft incident identified both the animal and the suspect at a market in Tangaza Local Government Area.
Sokoto State Police spokesperson DSP Ahmed Rufai confirmed the arrest and said the suspect remained in custody while investigators continued inquiries.
Police described the man as a suspected bandit allegedly linked to livestock theft.
That description remains an allegation attached to an active investigation.
No charge, arraignment, plea or conviction has been announced.
Owner identifies goat and suspect
According to Rufai, the alleged livestock theft occurred on September 15 in Jurelku village, Gidan Madi.
Police say the suspect and other people allegedly went to the community and took animals belonging to the victim.
The owner later identified the recovered goat at a market and also identified the suspect as one of the people allegedly involved.
Those claims form part of the police investigation and have not been tested in court.
Police say suspect is assisting investigation
Rufai said the suspect was providing investigators with information that could help identify and locate other people allegedly involved.
IDNN is not treating that statement as a police-confirmed confession, proof of gang membership or evidence that a wider criminal network has been established.
The investigation remains ongoing.
Livestock loss and rural livelihoods
Livestock theft can have direct consequences for rural households because animals may represent food, income and household savings.
The immediate accountability question is what the investigation ultimately establishes about the September 15 incident, whether other suspects are identified and whether the case proceeds to court.
Until then, the safe position remains:
Police have arrested a suspect after a goat was identified by its owner at a Sokoto market, but the alleged theft and any wider bandit links remain under investigation.
