Rivers Crisis: Fubara Dissolves Cabinet After Tinubu Intervention as Wike Signals Truce

Cabinet dissolution follows federal mediation

Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has dissolved the State Executive Council, directing commissioners and special advisers to hand over to permanent secretaries or senior ministry officials with immediate effect.

The decision was announced in a statement signed by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Onwuka Nzeshi.

Fubara thanked outgoing cabinet members for their service and wished them well.

The move comes 48 hours after President Bola Tinubu convened reconciliation talks involving Fubara and his predecessor, now Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.

Wike vs Fubara

Tinubuโ€™s second intervention

Speaking after inspecting projects in Abuja, Wike confirmed that the President met key Rivers political actors at the Presidential Villa in an effort to ease tensions arising from the protracted power struggle in the state.

โ€œI remember this is the second time the President is intervening and believe by the grace of God, this is going to be the last time,โ€ Wike said.

He added that he had urged members of the Rivers State House of Assembly to โ€œdo the needfulโ€ and comply with the Presidentโ€™s peace initiative.

Impeachment backdrop remains unresolved

The reconciliation effort comes amid an impeachment process initiated against Governor Fubara by lawmakers aligned with Wike โ€” the third such notice, now subject to litigation.

It remains unclear whether the pro-Wike lawmakers will withdraw the impeachment notice or whether the federal intervention will result in a durable settlement.

Observers noted that after the Villa meeting, Fubara accompanied Wike to his residence in Abuja, a development seen by some as a signal of easing hostilities.

No official agreement has been publicly disclosed.

Political reset or tactical pause?

The dissolution of the cabinet may signal:

โ€ข A restructuring of executive authority
โ€ข An attempt to consolidate political control
โ€ข A gesture toward reconciliation
โ€ข Or preparation for renewed confrontation

The state remains under political watch.

While federal mediation is active, the durability of any truce depends on legislative action and court proceedings.

For now, the cabinet is dissolved.

The impeachment notice remains.

The next move may determine whether Rivers stabilises โ€” or re-enters confrontation.
