Katsina bandit peace deal shaky as kingpin warns “kill 10 of us, 20 will rise”

By IDNN Security Desk

A notorious bandit leader, Kachalla Ummaru, has warned that killing his men will only produce more recruits, undermining ongoing peace deals in Katsina State.

“If today you kill 10 bandits, tomorrow you’ll see 20,” Ummaru said at a weekend meeting in Matazu LGA, captured in a video by counter-insurgency outlet Zagazola Makama.

Peace Talks Across Katsina

The warning came as two more LGAs, Sabuwa and Dandume, signed accords with bandits, bringing the total to nine. Local leaders promised to reopen cattle markets and protect communities, while bandits demanded the release of detained members.

Fragile Peace and Public Fear

The accords mark progress, but Ummaru’s warning underscores the fragility of the process. Residents remain wary of reprisals, while security analysts fear the pacts may legitimise armed groups without addressing root causes of rural violence.
