Nigeria U-23s Await Mauritania or DR Congo in AFCON 2027 Qualifying Path

Nigeria’s road to the 2027 U-23 Africa Cup of Nations is beginning to take shape.

The U-23 Eagles will enter the qualifiers in the second round, where they will face the winner of the first-round tie between Mauritania and DR Congo. CAF confirmed that pathway when it published the qualifying draw.

Mauritania currently hold the advantage.

They beat DR Congo 1-0 in Nouakchott in the first leg on September 28, with Hamidou Diarra scoring the only goal after 10 minutes.

The return leg is scheduled for October 6 at Stade TP Mazembe in Lubumbashi.

That leaves Nigeria watching and waiting.

Mauritania take a narrow edge to Lubumbashi

The first leg did not settle the tie, but it gave Mauritania a useful platform.

Diarra’s early goal proved decisive as the hosts held on for a 1-0 win, meaning DR Congo must overturn the deficit at home to advance.

CAF describes the tie as finely poised ahead of the second leg.

The winner will move directly into a second-round meeting with Nigeria.

Nigeria enter after first-round bye

Nigeria were among the teams handed byes into the second round based on performances across the previous three editions of the competition.

CAF’s qualifying draw placed the U-23 Eagles against the winner of Mauritania versus DR Congo.

That route gives Nigeria more preparation time, but it also means their first competitive assignment will come against an opponent already tested over two legs.

The wider qualification campaign will determine the teams that reach the 2027 U-23 AFCON finals in Egypt.

October 6 will settle Nigeria’s opponent

The immediate date for Nigeria is therefore not their own matchday.

It is October 6.

That is when DR Congo host Mauritania in Lubumbashi and the identity of Nigeria’s second-round opponent should be decided.

Until then, the confirmed pathway is clear: Nigeria have a second-round place secured, and either Mauritania or DR Congo will stand between the U-23 Eagles and the next stage of the road to Egypt 2027.
