Nigeria set for Russia rematch as Super Eagles head to Nizhny Novgorod
Nigeria will renew hostilities with Russia on October 6, 2026, after both football federations confirmed an international friendly in Nizhny Novgorod.
The Super Eagles will face Russia at the Nizhny Novgorod Stadium, making it the second senior meeting between the two countries in 16 months.
The Nigeria Football Federation confirmed the fixture on September 8, while the Russian Football Union also listed Nigeria among Russia’s opponents during its autumn programme.
Moscow draw sets up second meeting
The match brings the teams back together after a 1-1 draw at Moscow’s Luzhniki Stadium on June 6, 2025.
Russia took the lead through a Semi Ajayi own goal before Tolu Arokodare struck in the second half to earn Nigeria a draw.
This time, the rematch comes during a demanding stretch for the Super Eagles.
Super Eagles face testing September-October run
Nigeria are scheduled to begin their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign against Madagascar in Uyo on September 25 before travelling to face Guinea-Bissau on September 29.
The Russia friendly follows one week later, giving Nigeria another international test after two competitive fixtures.
For Russia, Nigeria will be the third opponent of an autumn sequence that also includes matches against Iran on September 29 and Namibia on October 3.
Nizhny Novgorod awaits Nigeria
The venue adds another layer to the occasion.
Nizhny Novgorod Stadium, built for the 2018 FIFA World Cup, has a capacity of about 44,000 and will stage Russia’s senior national team again after previously hosting a Euro 2020 qualifier against Cyprus in 2019.
Nigeria’s first encounter with Russia produced no winner, but it offered the Super Eagles a measure of the physical and technical challenge posed by Valery Karpin’s side.
Friendly carries wider competitive value
October now offers another examination at a point when Nigeria’s priorities will extend beyond a friendly result.
The Super Eagles will arrive in Nizhny Novgorod carrying the demands of an AFCON qualifying campaign and the wider need to keep building competitive depth.
The scoreboard may not carry qualifying points on October 6, but for Nigeria the rematch offers something valuable: another test of how the team responds against strong opposition after the pressure of competitive football.
