Makurdi flooding hits communities after prolonged rainfall

Flooding hits Makurdi communities after prolonged rainfall, raising response questions

Prolonged rainfall flooded several communities in Makurdi, Benue State, submerging homes and roads, damaging residents’ belongings and disrupting movement across parts of the state capital.

Areas reported affected include Achussa, New GRA, Nyiman, Idye, Naka Road, North Bank, Ankpa Quarters, Wurukum and Wadata after rain that stretched from Sunday night into Monday.

Residents said water entered homes and damaged household items and food. Schools, churches and businesses were also reported affected, while commuters struggled through flooded streets.

In the latest available agency-attributed report, the Benue State Emergency Management Agency said it had received reports from Achussa but had not yet conducted an on-site assessment.

That left important questions unresolved, including how many households were affected, whether residents had been displaced and what emergency assistance had been deployed.

No verified casualty or displacement figure was available from the current sources checked.

Some residents blamed blocked drainage channels linked to ongoing road construction for worsening conditions in parts of Makurdi. That remains a resident account and has not been independently established as the cause of the flooding.

The incident comes after emergency authorities tested Benue’s readiness for a major flood earlier in September.

The Makurdi exercise was designed to test warning systems, evacuation, search-and-rescue operations and coordination among the National Emergency Management Agency, Benue SEMA and other responders.

A federal flood advisory covering September 27 to October 10 also placed communities in Benue among areas facing critical flood risk from heavy rainfall, rising water levels, saturated soil and runoff.

The central accountability question is now whether those preparedness measures translated into an effective response when communities in the state capital flooded.

IDNN will continue to track the official assessment, displacement, relief deployment, road access and the drainage and construction concerns raised by residents.
