Finidi George ‘Devastated’ as Rivers United Collapse Late Against RS Berkane

🟨 A Crushing Night in Uyo

Rivers United head coach Finidi George has described his team as “deeply devastated” after RS Berkane overturned a late deficit to defeat the Nigerian club 2–1 in Uyo.

The match had looked balanced for long spells, and Rivers United appeared in control as the final minutes approached. However, a sharp collapse allowed the Moroccan giants to snatch the win and end the Pride of Rivers’ CAF Champions League campaign.

Finidi, visibly disappointed after the match, said the result did not reflect their effort.

“A draw wouldn’t have been a good result for us, but the loss is devastating,” he said.

🟨 Finidi: ‘My Players Deserved More’

According to Finidi, Rivers United produced a disciplined and structured performance for most of the game. The team pressed well, held possession, and created openings that could have sealed the contest earlier.

Despite this, their late-game concentration slipped. RS Berkane, a team known for punishing small mistakes, capitalised immediately.

Finidi admitted the final moments were difficult to accept.

“The overall performance of my players deserves more than what the outcome shows,” he said. “It is quite unfortunate that we lost today.”

His comments captured both frustration and pride — a mixture that reflects the team’s ambitions and the harsh reality of continental football.

🟨 Rivers United’s Continental Struggle

Rivers United remain Nigeria’s most consistent club on the continental stage in recent years. However, finishing matches strongly has become a recurring challenge.

The defeat mirrors a larger issue: Nigerian clubs often dominate phases of CAF competitions but struggle to manage critical moments. Consequently, opponents with more experience exploit those lapses.

The loss to Berkane reinforces that pattern. And with only Rivers United representing Nigeria in the CAF top 75 rankings, the pressure on the club continues to grow.

🟨 Focus Shifts Back to the NPFL

Finidi confirmed that the team will now shift their attention back to domestic duties.
The Nigeria Premier Football League season is entering a decisive phase, and Rivers United must rebuild confidence quickly.

A strong run at home could stabilise morale and help the team return to continental contention next season. The players, although disappointed, remain motivated to respond immediately.
