Falconets crash out as 10-player Nigeria fall to late Colombia winner
Nigeria’s Falconets were knocked out of the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in painful fashion on Sunday as Colombia struck in stoppage time to seal a 1-0 quarter-final victory over a Nigerian side reduced to 10 players in Łódź.
Valerin Loboa scored the decisive goal in the 92nd minute, finishing after goalkeeper Christiana Uzoma had stopped the initial effort but could not prevent Colombia from capitalising on the rebound.
Nigeria had stayed level deep into the contest before Kafiyat Masifere was sent off 13 minutes from time for a high challenge on Samantha Rodriguez.
The dismissal changed the balance of the quarter-final.
Falconets had chances before the red card
Nigeria were not without opportunities.
Tumininu Adeshina tested Colombia goalkeeper Luisa Agudelo with a powerful long-range effort in the first half, while Janet Akekoromowei also struck the crossbar as the Falconets searched for the breakthrough.
At the other end, Uzoma repeatedly kept Nigeria alive after the interval.
She twice denied Mariana Silva when the Colombian attacker broke through, helping the Falconets survive a period of increasing pressure.
But Nigeria’s task became far more difficult once Masifere was dismissed.
Colombia pushed harder against the 10 players and finally found the decisive opening in added time.
Loboa delivers the knockout blow
With extra time approaching, Colombia produced the moment that ended Nigeria’s tournament.
Uzoma blocked the first attempt, but the loose ball stayed in danger and Loboa reacted quickest to score in the second minute of stoppage time.
The goal sent Colombia into the semi-finals and brought the Falconets’ recovery through the tournament to an abrupt end.
Nigeria’s revival ends in the last eight
The Falconets had gathered momentum after an uncertain start to the competition.
Nigeria failed to win either of their opening two group matches before exploding into life with a 10-1 victory over New Caledonia.
They then produced one of their strongest performances of the tournament, beating England 3-0 in the Round of 16 to reach the quarter-finals.
That victory put Nigeria one game away from the last four.
Instead, the Colombia tie turned on the finest margins.
One red card, one late goal
There was little between the teams for most of the contest.
Nigeria created chances of their own, Uzoma produced important saves, and Colombia remained frustrated until the closing stages.
Then two moments changed everything.
Masifere’s red card left Nigeria defending the quarter-final with 10 players.
Loboa’s stoppage-time finish made sure there would be no recovery.
The Falconets leave the tournament after showing enough resilience to move from a difficult group stage into the final eight, but their campaign ended with the harshest lesson knockout football can deliver.
One player down. One late chance conceded. One goal.
And Nigeria’s World Cup run was over.
