Moses Aduku’s side overwhelmed New Caledonia 10-1 in their final Group F game at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Poland, producing a ruthless attacking display that carried Nigeria into the Round of 16 and set up a meeting with England.
Falconets overwhelm New Caledonia
It was a performance built on relentless pressure.
Nigeria registered 48 attempts at goal, put 22 on target and won 19 corners without conceding one, according to FIFA’s official match-centre statistics.
New Caledonia managed only four attempts in a contest the Falconets controlled almost from the opening whistle.
Ramotalahi Kareem set the tone early, converting from the penalty spot before completing a hat-trick.
Substitute Winner Onajite David matched her with three goals of her own as Nigeria turned their final group fixture into an attacking exhibition.
Rebecca Adegbemile scored twice, while Seimeyeha Janet Akekoromowei and Tosin Rafiu also found the net.
New Caledonia’s Joceline Kourevi struck in the 89th minute, but by then the damage was overwhelming.
Kareem, David drive the rout
The victory carried Nigeria into the last 16 as Group F runners-up, transforming what had been a tense final-day qualification assignment into one of the tournament’s most emphatic results.
Kareem, named FIFA’s Player of the Match, said her responsibility was to score goals and help the team, adding that the Falconets now wanted to make an impact beyond the group stage.
The scale of the victory will command attention, but Aduku was already looking beyond the scoreline.
The Nigeria coach welcomed his side’s attacking return while acknowledging that the Falconets had conceded too many goals earlier in the tournament and would need greater defensive discipline as the competition enters its knockout phase.
England now raise the stakes
That warning matters because the next opponent changes the equation completely.
England now stand between Nigeria and a place in the quarter-finals.
The Falconets can take confidence from the speed, volume and variety of their attack against New Caledonia, but England will present a different level of resistance.
Nigeria will no longer be dealing with a side pinned deep under almost uninterrupted pressure. The Round-of-16 contest will demand control without the ball, sharper defensive concentration and the ability to create chances under significantly greater pressure.
Still, the Falconets have given themselves exactly the kind of momentum knockout football feeds on.
