Super Eagles head coach Éric Chelle has moved to calm attention around his contract situation with the Nigeria Football Federation, saying his representative will handle the financial discussions while he focuses on the team. Chelle confirmed that there are still financial issues to sort out with the NFF. But he made it clear that he does not want the matter to distract him from his work with Nigeria.
The comments come as the Super Eagles prepare for the Unity Cup in London, where Nigeria will begin their title defence against Zimbabwe at The Valley on Tuesday, May 26.
Chelle Keeps Focus On The Pitch
Speaking to journalist Osasu Obayiuwana, Chelle said the contract talks are not his immediate concern.
“Yes, there are financial issues to be discussed and resolved. But I leave them to my agent to handle with the federation,” Chelle said.
“I want to concentrate on the job and the task at hand.”
The statement gives the clearest sign yet that Chelle wants to separate the administrative side of his job from the football side.
His current deal reportedly runs until January 2027, but the financial side of the agreement remains a talking point around the national team.
NPFL Scouting Now On The Agenda
Chelle also confirmed that he plans to return to Nigeria to watch Nigeria Premier Football League matches.
That move could open the door for more home-based players to force their way into his plans.
“I am coming to Nigeria to watch some NPFL games and see some players and we have the Unity Cup in London to prepare for,” he added.
The scouting trip is important because Chelle is still shaping the next version of the Super Eagles squad. It also gives domestic players a chance to make a stronger case before the next international window.
Unity Cup Offers A Testing Ground
Nigeria will face Zimbabwe in their Unity Cup opener. A win would set up a meeting with either Jamaica or India in the next round.
