Ebonyi Radio Station Suspends General Manager Over Criticism of Governor

GM Godfrey Chikwere suspended over remarks on Governor Nwifuru

Legacy FM, a privately-owned radio station in Ebonyi State, has suspended its acting General Manager, Godfrey Chikwere, over alleged persistent negative remarks about Governor Francis Nwifuru.

The station’s management announced the suspension on Saturday, accusing Chikwere of unruly conduct and violating the station’s code of ethics.

“The management of Legacy FM 95.1, The Sound of Now, hereby suspends the acting General Manager, Godfrey Chikwere, with immediate effect… due to unruly behaviour and disobedience to the code of conduct,” the statement read.

Chikwere’s criticism reportedly included allegations of poor communication, underperformance by state appointees, and lack of clear policy direction. In a Facebook post on Friday, he urged the governor to “step on toes” to improve governance.

State officials responded sharply. Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Monday Uzor, labelled Chikwere’s remarks baseless and ungrateful, pointing out government assistance to the station, including a new SUV, a transformer, and road construction to its premises.

Commissioner for Information Ikeuwa Omebeh also condemned Chikwere’s comments as “derogatory and inciting,” warning that they crossed professional boundaries.
