Super Eagles assistant coach Daniel Ogunmodede has expressed interest in becoming the next head coach of Nigeria’s U-20 national team (Flying Eagles). Ogunmodede, currently serving as assistant to Eric Chelle, is exploring the opportunity amidst uncertainty about his future at club level with Remo Stars.
A source close to the development confirmed that Ogunmodede is keen to take charge of the Flying Eagles after the current vacancy. “Yes, the Remo Stars coach wants to be the new coach of the Flying Eagles,” the source revealed. “His future at his NPFL club is uncertain, so he is looking to secure a soft landing by taking charge of the Flying Eagles.”

Ogunmodede’s Role with Super Eagles
Over the past year, Ogunmodede has served as one of the home-based assistants to Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle, working closely with Nigeria’s senior national team. Ogunmodede gained invaluable experience during the African Nations Championship (CHAN) and the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
His role in assisting the senior team has given him exposure to top-level international football, which would benefit him in managing the U-20 team.
Historic Achievement with Remo Stars
At the club level, Ogunmodede led Remo Stars F.C. to their first-ever Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) title in 2025. This was a historic moment for the Ikenne-based club, cementing his reputation as one of Nigeria’s top emerging coaches.
His success with Remo Stars further solidified his credentials, making him a strong candidate for the Flying Eagles role.

Flying Eagles Head Coach Vacancy
The position of the Flying Eagles head coach became vacant after Aliyu Zubairu left the role to manage Telecom Egypt SC in Egypt’s Second Division League. Zubairu, who had managed the Flying Eagles to notable achievements, signed a two-year contract with the Egyptian club in November 2025, where he will focus on securing their promotion.
Technical Committee Meeting
The Nigeria Football Federation’s technical committee is scheduled to meet in Abuja on Wednesday to decide on new appointments for several national teams, including the Flying Eagles (U-20), Golden Eaglets (U-17), and Flamingos (U-17 women’s team). The committee’s decision will determine the future of the Flying Eagles, with Ogunmodede one of the key candidates for the role.

What’s Next for Ogunmodede?
As the technical committee meets, Daniel Ogunmodede will be hoping for a positive outcome in his bid to manage Nigeria’s U-20 team. If appointed, Ogunmodede will look to continue Nigeria’s tradition of strong performances at youth level, especially in upcoming U-20 World Cup qualifiers and tournaments.
His experience with both Remo Stars and the Super Eagles could prove crucial in developing the next generation of Nigerian football stars.
