Bauchi Police Arrest Suspect Over Kidnapping, Robbery and Rape Allegations
Bauchi State Police Command says it has arrested a 53-year-old man accused of posing as a commercial motorcycle rider to target passengers for kidnapping, robbery and, in some cases, rape.
The suspect, Gambo Hassan, also known as “Anahaka,” was arrested during a police patrol in Bauchi metropolis on September 11.
Police say investigators have so far identified 35 women as alleged victims of his wider alleged activities.
That figure does not mean 35 rape cases have been established.
The allegations span kidnapping, robbery and rape, and Hassan has not been convicted of any offence.
How police say the arrest happened
According to the police account, officers from B Division, GRA, Bauchi, encountered Hassan at about 8:45pm along Adamu Jumba Road.
Police said he was riding a Bajaj motorcycle while wearing a face mask and cap.
A knife was allegedly recovered during the encounter.
Investigators allege that Hassan posed as a commercial motorcycle rider, especially during evening hours, to pick up unsuspecting passengers.
Police say women were among those allegedly targeted for kidnapping and robbery and that, in some cases, rape was also alleged.
Why the number 35 needs care
Police initially said investigators had identified 15 women as alleged victims.
That figure later rose to 35 as the investigation expanded.
The number refers to women police say were victims of Hassan’s alleged criminal activity generally.
It must not be converted into a claim that 35 women were raped.
That distinction is critical both for factual accuracy and for the dignity of the women involved.
Police cite alleged confession and recovered items
Police say Hassan allegedly confessed during interrogation and assisted investigators in identifying some of the women.
The command also says investigators recovered mobile phones, women’s clothing and accessories, cash and other items.
Those items are police-reported exhibits.
They should not be described as proceeds of crime unless investigators or a court establish that link.
A police-reported confession is also not a conviction.
The suspect and the recovered items have been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation and possible prosecution.
The legal position
Hassan remains a suspect.
No court finding reviewed by IDNN has established his guilt.
The legal distinctions are clear:
arrest is not conviction, an alleged confession is not guilt, and recovered property does not by itself prove criminal responsibility.
Investigators will still need to establish which alleged offence applies to which complainant and what evidence supports each accusation.
Survivor dignity comes first
The case potentially involves dozens of women, including alleged survivors of sexual violence.
Their identities must remain protected.

Any survivor account must also be handled with informed consent, privacy protection and careful legal review.
What investigators still need to establish
The case now turns on evidence.
Police will need to determine:
- which alleged offences are connected to each complainant;
- whether independent evidence corroborates individual allegations;
- the ownership and origin of recovered items;
- whether other suspects were involved;
- whether additional alleged victims exist; and
- what charges, if any, prosecutors ultimately file.
For now, the verified position remains:
