Nigeria has arrived in Budapest with nine athletes and one immediate challenge. They will have to survive a championship built to give the world’s best nowhere to hide.
Tobi Amusan leads the Nigerian contingent into the inaugural World Athletics Ultimate Championship. It will be running from September 11 to 13 at Budapest’s National Athletics Centre.
World Athletics has assembled 381 athletes from 65 federations across 28 disciplines for a three-night competition. This will be built around high-pressure semifinals and finals. This is unlike the extended rounds of a traditional global championship.
For Nigeria, Amusan carries the biggest immediate spotlight
The Nigerian hurdles star is entered in the women’s 100m hurdles, where she faces a field containing some of the world’s leading specialists.
Amusan arrives in Budapest with a 12.23-second season best, placing her among the leading performers in the event this year.
There is little room to ease into the competition.
The women’s 100m hurdles semifinals and final are both scheduled for Friday, meaning Amusan must negotiate two high-pressure races on the same evening if she is to challenge for the inaugural title.
Nigeria’s ambition, however, extends beyond its biggest hurdles name.
Nine-athlete contingent, with Kanyinsola Ajayi entered in the men’s 100m, Udodi Onwuzurike in the 200m, Ezekiel Nathaniel in the 400m hurdles and Ella Onojuvwevwo in the women’s 400m, alongside relay representation are competing.
That gives Nigeria opportunities across sprints, hurdles and relay competition and a chance to make an early mark on a championship designed around elite confrontation.
There is serious money attached to that pressure too.
World Athletics has announced a $10 million prize pool, with individual champions eligible for $150,000.
The format makes every mistake expensive
With track athletes entering competition at semifinal level in several events, there are fewer opportunities to recover from a poor start. Qualification pressure arrives immediately.
That may suit a Nigerian team carrying athletes accustomed to racing against elite opposition.
Amusan remains the headline act, but Ajayi, Nathaniel, Onwuzurike and Onojuvwevwo give Nigeria several routes into the championship conversation before Budapest closes on Sunday.
This is not an event designed for easing into form.
It is three nights, compressed fields and immediate consequence.
For Nigeria’s nine, the opportunity is historic.
The pressure starts now.
