Thomas Tuchel called for perspective after England’s flat 1-0 defeat to Japan at Wembley, insisting the result should be seen as a useful lesson even as it raised fresh questions ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. England were beaten by Kaoru Mitoma’s first-half goal in their final home friendly before Tuchel names his tournament squad in May.
The England coach admitted the loss hurt, especially at home, but pointed to missing players and another tactical experiment as part of the context. Harry Kane was ruled out after picking up an injury in training, while senior players including John Stones, Declan Rice, Bukayo Saka and Jordan Henderson were also absent.
Without Kane, England lacked threat for long spells and struggled to turn possession into real control. Japan punished them on the counter through Mitoma in the 23rd minute, and the visitors could easily have added more before England improved late on. Tuchel later said top teams naturally rely on top players and admitted Kane’s absence removed both attacking threat and leadership from the side.
Hajime Moriyasu said the win should give his players belief that they can beat anyone at the World Cup. It was Japan’s first victory over England and extended an unbeaten run that has included wins over Brazil, Ghana, Bolivia and Scotland.
For England, the debate is now clear. Tuchel wants calm and context, but the defeat exposed how blunt the side can look when key figures are missing and rhythm is absent. For Japan, it was proof that their discipline and patience can still trouble elite opposition on the biggest stage.
