Tsitsipas Faces Early Exit at Indian Wells as Upsets Shake the Draw

Stefanos Tsitsipas’ rapid decline continued at Indian Wells 2026 as the Greek star suffered a disappointing first-round defeat to Canada’s Denis Shapovalov. The 27-year-old, once ranked as high as world number three, fell 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 in a topsy-turvy match, marking his third consecutive loss.

Tsitsipas’ Ongoing Struggles

Tsitsipas’ defeat at Indian Wells extends his slump, which has seen him drop out of the ATP’s top 40 for the first time since May 2018. Heading into the prestigious Masters 1000 event in California, the Greek star was hoping for a morale-boosting tournament, but instead, he was knocked out early by Shapovalov, who capitalized on Tsitsipas’ erratic play.

Other First-Round Results

Elsewhere in the men’s draw, Brazilian teenager Joao Fonseca battled through a tight 7-6(2), 6-4 victory over Raphael Collignon. Italy’s Matteo Berrettini also came from a set down to defeat Adrian Mannarino 4-6, 7-5, 7-5 in just under three hours, continuing his pursuit of a deep run in the tournament.

Women’s Draw Upsets

On the women’s side, 2019 champion Bianca Andreescu, who received a wildcard into the main draw, was eliminated in a three-set battle by Kamilla Rakhimova. The match ended 6-7(6), 6-0, 6-1 in Rakhimova’s favor, while fellow big names Sloane Stephens and Paula Badosa also fell at the first hurdle in California.

Ukraine’s Dayana Yastremska, however, impressed with a commanding 6-3, 6-2 win over Shuai Zhang, showcasing her potential to make a deep run in the competition.

Looking Ahead

The tournament is already showing signs of unpredictability, with several top seeds sent packing early. With Tsitsipas and Andreescu’s exits, attention will now turn to other big names still in the tournament as they aim to take advantage of the open field.

As the competition progresses, all eyes will be on the top players in both the men’s and women’s draws, as Indian Wells continues to unfold with drama and excitement.
