Nigeria Football Clubs Ranked In World’s Top 500 Clubs in Latest IFFHS Rankings

Nigeria football Clubs Rivers United and Enyimba have been ranked among the world’s top 500 football clubs in the latest assessment by the International Federation of Football History and Statistics (IFFHS).

In the IFFHS Men’s Club World Ranking, which covers the period from January 1, 2021 to December 31, 2025, Rivers United placed 278th globally with 361.75 points, while Enyimba followed closely at 421st with 280 points. Notably, they are the only Nigerian clubs in the top 500.

Steady Rise for Rivers United

Rivers United’s ranking reflects their consistent rise both domestically and on the continental stage. The Port Harcourt club won the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) title in the 2021/22 season and secured a third-place finish in the 2022/23 campaign.

On the continental stage, Rivers United reached the quarter-finals of the CAF Confederation Cup in both the 2022/23 and 2023/24 seasons. They have also qualified for the group phase of the 2025/26 CAF Champions League.

Enyimba’s Continued Presence

Enyimba, one of Nigeria’s most successful clubs, also strengthened its case in the five-year ranking. The nine-time domestic champions clinched another league title in 2023 and earned two third-place finishes over the ranking period. Enyimba remained competitive in CAF tournaments, reaching the CAF Confederation Cup group stage in 2024/25.

However, despite this success, Enyimba are currently struggling in the NPFL, sitting just one point above the relegation zone. This contrast between their continental and domestic form highlights the challenges the club faces on both fronts.

NPFL’s Decline and Individual Progress

Despite Rivers United and Enyimba’s strong performances, the NPFL has seen a decline in global rankings. The league dropped 15 places to 91st globally in the 2025 IFFHS assessment, accumulating 171.75 points. This drop underscores the broader challenges facing Nigerian club football, including inconsistency in domestic performances and weaker showings in continental tournaments.

However, the inclusion of Rivers United and Enyimba in the top 500 rankings suggests that individual club progress remains possible, even as Nigerian football as a whole faces structural hurdles. Their continued success in CAF competitions highlights the potential for improvement despite challenges in the domestic league.

IFFHS Ranking Methodology

The IFFHS rankings are based on a points system that evaluates club performances across domestic leagues, continental competitions, and global tournaments. The rankings offer a comprehensive view of a club’s consistency and impact over a five-year period, rather than focusing on individual standout seasons.

At the top of the IFFHS global standings, Spanish giants Real Madrid lead the way, followed by Manchester City and Brazilian club CR Flamengo.
