Rivers United exit CAF Champions League on away goals, set for $100,000 CAF payment
Rivers United are out of the 2026/27 CAF Champions League after FC San Pedro survived a tense return leg in Nigeria to advance from a tie that finished 3-3 on aggregate.
The Port Harcourt club drew 2-2 with the Ivorian side on September 13 after the first leg in Côte d’Ivoire had ended 1-1.
CAF confirmed that San Pedro progressed on away goals, ending Rivers United’s continental campaign at the first preliminary-round stage.
Home advantage fails to rescue Rivers United
It is a brutal exit for Rivers United because there was almost nothing separating the teams across 180 minutes.
A 1-1 draw away from home in the first leg had left the Nigerian side with a genuine opportunity to finish the job on home soil.
Instead, San Pedro scored twice in the return fixture and that away-goal advantage ultimately decided the contest after another draw.
For Rivers United, the sporting consequence is immediate: their route towards the Champions League group stage has been cut off before the second preliminary round.
CAF’s $100,000 payment softens financial blow
The financial blow, however, will be softened by CAF’s expanded support programme for clubs eliminated during the preliminary phase.
CAF announced before this season’s interclub competitions that teams knocked out in the preliminary rounds of the Champions League and Confederation Cup would each receive $100,000 to assist with travel and other logistical costs.
That means Rivers United are set to receive the payment despite their early elimination.
The support reflects CAF’s attempt to reduce one of the persistent pressures on clubs competing across Africa: the cost of flights, accommodation and cross-border logistics before teams ever reach the lucrative group stages.
Continental questions remain for Nigerian clubs
But the money cannot disguise the competitive disappointment.
Rivers United entered the home leg with the tie balanced and qualification within reach. San Pedro leave with the place in the next round, while the Nigerian club must confront another short continental campaign.
That result also puts renewed focus on the wider performance of Nigerian clubs in CAF competition.
Nigeria’s representatives routinely carry expectations shaped by the size of the domestic football market and the country’s history on the continent, but turning that weight into sustained runs in modern CAF club competitions remains the harder test.
For Rivers United, the $100,000 payment provides useful financial relief.
What it cannot buy back is the continental opportunity that disappeared in Port Harcourt.
