Real Madrid, PSG, Atalanta, and Galatasaray Confirm UEFA Champions League Round of 16 Spots

Several heavyweights and surprise packages have confirmed their places in the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 following the conclusion of the play-off ties.

Real Madrid Edges Benfica

At the Santiago Bernabeu, Real Madrid secured a 3-1 aggregate victory over Benfica with a 2-1 win in the second leg. Vinicius Junior netted the decisive goal 10 minutes from time, calmly finishing across goal to seal the win.

Benfica briefly threatened an upset when Rafa Silva scored first, but Aurelien Tchouameni quickly responded with a fine effort from the edge of the area. Vinicius’ late strike ensured the holders progressed. Real Madrid will face either Manchester City or Sporting CP in the next round.

PSG Overcomes Monaco

Defending champions Paris Saint-Germain advanced to the Round of 16 after a dramatic 2-2 draw with AS Monaco, securing a 5-4 aggregate win. Monaco initially led through Maghnes Akliouche’s goal, but Mamadou Coulibaly’s red card shifted the momentum.

PSG equalized through Marquinhos, and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia fired in the winner after Achraf Hakimi’s shot was parried. Monaco’s Jordan Teze scored a late consolation. PSG will now face either Barcelona or Chelsea in the next stage.

In one of the most dramatic comebacks of the play-off stage, Atalanta BC overturned a 2-0 first-leg deficit to defeat Borussia Dortmund 4-3 on aggregate. Gianluca Scamacca and Davide Zappacosta leveled the tie before Mario Pasalic put Atalanta ahead.

Dortmund’s Karim Adeyemi almost forced extra time, but a penalty awarded to Atalanta deep into stoppage time, following a VAR review, sealed their progression. Lazar Samardzic converted from the spot, sending Atalanta through. They will play either Arsenal or Bayern Munich next.
