NPFL: Rangers Stay Top After Late Escape at Barau as Rivers United Close In

Rangers stay first on 17 points, but Rivers United remain just one point behind after Matchday 8.

Rangers International are still top of the Nigeria Premier Football League.

But Matchday 8 made them work for it.

The defending champions needed a stoppage-time equaliser from Chidiebere Nwobodo to escape Kano with a 2–2 draw against Barau FC after surrendering an early lead and falling behind to two second-half penalties.

The point keeps Rangers first on 17 points from eight matches, one ahead of Rivers United, who remain unbeaten after a goalless draw away to Abia Warriors.

The gap is narrow.

The pressure is not.

Rangers strike first, then lose control

Rangers took the lead in the 38th minute through Ifeanyi Okechukwu.

At that point, the champions were on course to leave Sani Abacha Stadium with another victory and further strengthen their grip on first place.

Barau changed the match after the interval.

Joseph Atule converted from the penalty spot in the 56th minute to make it 1–1.

Twelve minutes later, Aliyu Sugau scored another penalty to put the home side 2–1 ahead.

Rangers were suddenly chasing the game.

And chasing their place at the top.

Nwobodo rescues the champions

The champions did not find their way back until stoppage time.

Nwobodo struck late to level the contest at 2–2 and preserve the point Rangers needed to remain first after another matchweek.

It was not the kind of afternoon a league leader controls from beginning to end.

It was the kind it survives.

That distinction matters.

Rangers left Kano without three points, but they also avoided the defeat that would have opened the door wider for Rivers United.

Rivers United stay one point behind

Rivers had their own opportunity to increase the pressure.

Instead, they were held 0–0 by Abia Warriors.

The draw keeps Rivers unbeaten after eight league matches.

They sit second with 16 points, just one behind Rangers.

That is now the central early-season pressure line.

Rangers lead.

Rivers remain within touching distance.

Plateau United deliver Matchday 8’s biggest statement

While Rangers and Rivers dropped points, Plateau United produced the most emphatic result of the round.

They demolished Kano Pillars 4–0 at the New Jos Stadium.

Paul Samson opened the scoring in the third minute before Ekundayo Ojo doubled the advantage on the stroke of half-time.

Samuel Ayanrinde added a third in the 82nd minute and Nenrot Silas completed the rout deep into stoppage time.

The win lifted Plateau United to third place on 14 points, three behind Rangers.

That puts another club close enough to matter.

Sporting Lagos recover from 18-second shock

There was drama in Lagos too.

Bendel Insurance stunned Sporting Lagos after just 18 seconds, with Kayode Oke scoring what the NPFL officially describes as the fastest goal of the season so far.

Sporting responded quickly.

Victor Samuel equalised in the 14th minute before Gafar Olaniyan completed the turnaround eight minutes later, securing a 2–1 victory.

It was the kind of comeback that made Matchday 8 more than a table story.

The league produced pressure at the top, a four-goal demolition in Jos and a recovery from the season’s fastest goal in Lagos.

The early title race is tightening

Eight matches do not decide a championship.

They do establish pressure.

Rangers have 17 points.

Rivers United have 16.

Plateau United have 14.

The champions still own first place.

But they no longer have room for a comfortable glance over their shoulder.

Rivers United remain unbeaten and one point away.

Plateau United have moved closer.

And Rangers’ latest result required a stoppage-time rescue.

The table still says Rangers are first.

Matchday 8 says the race behind them is getting louder.
