Plateau Attack: NSCDC Officer Killed, Businessman Reported Abducted in Mangu

An NSCDC officer was killed and a businessman reportedly abducted during an October 19 attack in Pushit community, Mangu LGA, Plateau State.

NSCDC Officer Killed, Businessman Reported Abducted in Plateau Despite Curfew

PLATEAU — A Deputy Superintendent of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps has been killed in Pushit community, Mangu Local Government Area, while a businessman was reportedly abducted during the same attack despite a state-imposed dusk-to-dawn curfew.

The NSCDC confirmed the death of its officer, Distu Garba Audu, who was shot during the Monday night incident.

Separate community accounts reported that armed men had earlier abducted a local businessman in Pushit before encountering the NSCDC officer as they moved through the community.

What community accounts say

Community member Lawrence Tabitha told journalists that the attack occurred at about 9:30 p.m. on October 19.

According to his account, the abducted businessman deals in fuel, cement and fertiliser.

Tabitha said the NSCDC officer was riding his motorcycle near his residence when he encountered the attackers as they fled with the abducted man.

He alleged that the officer was shot after the headlight of his motorcycle exposed the attackers’ movement.

That sequence remains a community account and has not been independently reconstructed by IDNN.

Attack occurred during state-imposed curfew

Mangu was under a dusk-to-dawn curfew introduced by the Plateau State Government on September 21, with restrictions running from 6:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. and stated to remain in force until further notice.

The reported 9:30 p.m. attack therefore occurred within the restricted period.

That makes the incident more than another isolated killing or abduction.

The accountability question is whether measures introduced after repeated violence are actually reducing the ability of armed groups to enter communities, kill residents and abduct people.

Residents cited in current reporting say Pushit and neighbouring communities have experienced repeated security incidents.

The latest attack adds pressure on the Plateau State Government and security agencies to explain what protection is available to residents living under curfew restrictions.

Businessman’s status remains unresolved

Current reporting establishes that a businessman was reported abducted during the attack.

IDNN has not found a reliable subsequent update confirming his release, rescue or current condition.

The safest current description is therefore that he was reported abducted and his present status remains unresolved.

The Plateau State Police Command and Operation Enduring Peace had not provided a full public account in the strongest reporting reviewed for this story.

No attacker identity, motive, ethnicity or affiliation has been independently established.

A security test for Pushit

For Pushit residents, the killing of a security officer and reported abduction of a businessman during an active curfew sharpen a difficult question:

What protection does a curfew provide if armed attackers can still move through communities and leave with residents?

The existence of that question does not by itself establish negligence.

The answer will depend on what security agencies establish about the attack, whether the abducted businessman is safely recovered and whether repeated incidents in the district decline.

For now, one fact is firmly established: an NSCDC officer has been killed.

The businessman’s fate remains the next urgent question.

WHAT TO WATCH

  • Any confirmed release or rescue of the businessman
  • Plateau Police or Operation Enduring Peace account
  • Arrests or confirmed attacker identification
  • Any change to the curfew
  • Further incidents in Pushit and neighbouring communities
