Branches of the Nigerian Bar Association in Plateau State are calling for stronger security measures after renewed attacks in parts of the state raised fresh questions about protection for affected communities.
The Jos, Bukuru, Pankshin and Shendam branches called for stronger intelligence gathering, faster response to attacks, improved operational capacity and prosecution of those responsible for violence.
Their intervention follows a series of recent security incidents in Barkin Ladi, Mangu and other affected areas.
Curfew followed renewed attacks
The Plateau State Government imposed a dusk-to-dawn curfew on Barkin Ladi, Bokkos and Mangu local government areas on September 21.
The government said the 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. restriction was intended to support security operations, maintain public order and help stabilise affected communities.
Further violence was nevertheless reported during the curfew period.
On September 23, Plateau Police confirmed that a senior police officer and three civilians were killed in separate attacks in Barkin Ladi.
Separately, the Mwaghavul Youth Movement reported that three men were killed in Mangu during the curfew period.
The Mangu deaths were reported by the community group and should not be treated as part of the police-confirmed Barkin Ladi casualty figure.
More attacks reported later in the week
Further violence was reported in Barkin Ladi later in the week.
On September 26, reports said six people were killed and two others injured in an attack on a mining site in Lajam Marit village.
Separate reports also covered additional attacks in Plateau communities during the same period.
Those incidents occurred at different locations and times and should not be combined into a single casualty total.
Security agencies were reported to have intensified patrols and other operations in affected areas after the attacks.
NBA calls for stronger action
Against that backdrop, the Plateau NBA branches say existing security measures need to be strengthened.
Their demands include better intelligence gathering, improved equipment for security agencies, faster response to attacks and more effective prosecution of perpetrators.
The association also made broader allegations about the identity and movement of attackers and about conditions in some affected communities.
Those claims remain allegations by the NBA branches and have not been independently established by IDNN.
The verified issue is narrower: attacks have continued in parts of Plateau while curfews and other security measures have been in place, and the lawyers are demanding a stronger response.
Government says security measures are being reinforced
The Plateau State Government says it has continued to strengthen security measures through intelligence sharing, community engagement and cooperation among security agencies.
Earlier in September, Governor Caleb Mutfwang directed security agencies to improve intelligence gathering, strengthen inter-agency coordination and expand preventive operations against emerging threats.
The government has also said the curfews imposed in Barkin Ladi, Bokkos and Mangu were designed to help security agencies restore stability and protect residents.
Those measures show that authorities have announced and implemented responses to the threat.
What remains open is how those measures are performing against repeated attacks.
Accountability now centres on measurable outcomes
The key accountability questions are practical.
How quickly are security agencies responding when attacks begin?
What intelligence changes have followed the recent killings?
How many suspects have been identified or arrested?
How many cases have moved toward prosecution?
And have preventive deployments reduced the frequency or reach of attacks in affected communities?
Those questions can be answered only through verifiable security and justice outcomes.
For communities in Barkin Ladi, Mangu, Bokkos and other affected areas, the immediate concern is whether residents can live, travel and work safely.
For government and security agencies, the next test will be the measurable record: response times, arrests, prosecutions, intelligence gains and whether the pattern of attacks changes.
