NUT Rejects Teachers’ CBT Exams, Demands Return to Paper-Based Testing

The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has strongly rejected the continued use of Computer-Based Tests (CBT) for primary and secondary school teachers, calling for an immediate return to paper-based assessment models.
NUT Secretary-General Dr. Mike Ike-Ene made the position known during an education policy roundtable in Abuja, arguing that many teachers are digitally under-equipped for CBT exams, leading to unfair evaluations.
“These are not failures of knowledge — they are failures of access and training,” he said.
Equity and Accessibility at the Core
The union stated that the CBT format disadvantages teachers in rural areas, many of whom lack steady electricity, internet access, or digital literacy.
“If we want equity, we must meet teachers where they are — not where policymakers wish they were,” Ike-Ene added.
The NUT has submitted a formal memo to the Federal Ministry of Education, calling for:
