Niger State Governor Umaru Bago has announced the dissolution of his cabinet, asking all commissioners and special advisers to vacate their offices with immediate effect.

In a statement issued by the Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Abubakar Usman, the governor thanked the outgoing officials for their service and directed them to hand over to permanent secretaries.

“His Excellency appreciates the contributions of the commissioners and advisers in advancing the goals of this administration. However, the time has come for a reorganisation to strengthen governance and delivery of service to the people of Niger State,” the statement read.

Bago, however, retained a handful of trusted aides, including his Chief of Staff, the Head of Service, and a few senior advisers considered vital to ongoing projects.

The decision is expected to pave the way for a new round of political appointments as the governor seeks to consolidate power ahead of 2027. Party insiders say the dissolution reflects a broader strategy to balance competing interests in Niger State’s complex political landscape.

Analysts note that cabinet shakeups in midterm are often used by governors to reassert control, reward loyalty, and refresh policy direction.

“This is both a political and administrative move. Bago is positioning himself for the second half of his term, and he clearly wants a team that aligns with his vision,” one political analyst in Minna told IDNN.

The governor is expected to unveil a new cabinet in the coming weeks after consultations with party leaders and stakeholders.
