Residents of Fanga community in Mashegu Local Government Area of Niger State say armed attackers killed five people and abducted 18 others during an attack on October 12, but police have not independently confirmed the reported casualty and abduction figures.
Reports citing residents said the attackers entered the community, burnt houses and shops and forced some families to flee.
The reported five deaths and 18 abductions remain resident accounts rather than independently established casualty records.
Residents describe attack on Fanga
The attack was reported to have occurred on October 12.
A resident cited in the original reporting said five people were killed and 18 others abducted during the assault.
Residents also reported destruction of property and disruption to farming, schooling and movement as insecurity forced people away from the community.
Police and state authorities had not confirmed those claims at the latest verified check.
Some residents also alleged that armed groups had previously demanded levies from communities in the area. IDNN has not independently established those claims.
Police confirm separate Borgu attack
Police have separately confirmed an earlier attack on Kokani and Kigbira communities in Borgu Local Government Area.
Niger State Police spokesperson Wasiu Abiodun said armed attackers entered the communities on October 8, set houses ablaze and displaced residents.
Police said four members of a local vigilance group were injured and that joint security teams were deployed to the area.
The police statement on Borgu does not confirm the reported five deaths and 18 abductions from Fanga.
The incidents therefore remain separate for casualty verification, even as both point to continuing security pressure in parts of Niger State.
Fanga toll remains unresolved
The central unanswered question is the final human toll from Fanga.
At the latest verified check, no police or Niger State Government statement located by IDNN had confirmed that five people were killed or that 18 people were abducted.
The safest current position is that Fanga residents reported five deaths and 18 abductions, while official confirmation remains pending.
Authorities have also not publicly clarified the current status of those reported abducted or whether residents displaced from the community have been able to return safely.
The next authoritative update will depend on confirmation from police, state authorities or other primary sources able to establish the casualty figures and status of those reported missing.
